Telemark, or free heel skiing was forgotten for a long time. The alpine technique proved to be the easier and more effortless one.
Modern technologies, better boots, skis and bindings made alpine skiing dominate the worlds ski resorts.
But with the ever-increasing number of skiers, the desire to venture into the backcountry became more and more apparent.
And though this ancient technique was always practiced in Scandinavia, it needed some keen skiers from the US to experience a 'Renaissance'. Telemark skiing, with a considerably soft boot, attached to the ski only at the tip of its sole by a small three pin binding, and therefore very light, made it the ideal hiking tool.

But especially its different technique, which requires more feel, physical strength, balance, and commitment to the terrain, and consequently a sensation much closer to the snow, let it become the ultimate challenge.
At the end of the 80ies, it became my challenge and passion too, and on my days off you see me mostly on Tele's.
